Crumple

Video installation · 3h 16’
Crumple

The work stems from a simple, repetitive gesture: crumpling a sheet of paper. Through the reiteration of the action, a minimal and seemingly insignificant gesture progressively turns into a force capable of occupying and altering space. Accumulation becomes the core of the work: what at first appears light and ephemeral grows until it becomes presence, mass and pressure. The repetition produces a transformation that involves both the matter and the body performing the action, pushing the gesture towards its own limit. In the installation the video is confined inside a smartphone hung on the wall, while the sound of the crumpling paper is amplified and diffused into the environment. The contrast between the small scale of the image and the sonic expansion makes the logic of accumulation tangible.
